Raymarine: Embracing the S-100 Framework for Commercial Shipping

The maritime industry is on the brink of a major transformation. From January 2029, all newly fitted Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) must comply with the IMO’s S-100 framework. At Raymarine, we see this not as a regulatory hurdle, but as an opportunity to redefine navigation for the next generation.

What is S-100 and Why Does It Matter?

The S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model, developed by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), introduces a new era of interoperability and richer data for safer, smarter navigation. Unlike the current S-57 standard, S-100 supports multiple data layers, such as bathymetry (S-102), tides and currents (S-104), providing mariners with unprecedented situational awareness.

For shipowners, pilots, and hydrographic offices, this means:

  • Enhanced safety during berthing and restricted waters.
  • Optimised voyage planning with real-time tidal and current data.
  • Reduced workload for bridge teams through intuitive interfaces.

Introducing Pathfinder: Next-Generation ECDIS

Raymarine is leading the charge with our Pathfinder ECDIS, a scalable, cyber-resilient ECDIS designed from the ground up to be ready for the S-100 era. Key features include:

  • Intuitive UX shaped by mariner feedback.
  • Seamless integration with existing ship systems.
  • Automated updates and remote diagnostics for compliance and due diligence.
  • Future-ready architecture for easy upgrades as S-100 evolves.

Our design philosophy is simple: make navigation easier, safer, and smarter. No more steep learning curves or legacy systems prone to errors. Pathfinder is engineered for reliability and simplicity.

Sea Trials and Real-World Insights

S-100 ECDIS sea trial

Over the past year, we’ve conducted extensive sea trials with the UK Hydrographic Office, validating S-100 compliance and testing multi-layered datasets in real-world conditions. Feedback has been clear: crews appreciate the intuitive interface and are excited about the benefits of richer data layers.

Live demos have shown how S-102 bathymetric data can transform berthing operations, while S-104 tidal information enhances voyage planning. Challenges remain, such as optimising data presentation for night operations, but we’re working closely with the IHO and industry stakeholders to refine standards.

Beginning in the first quarter of 2026, our Pathfinder ECDIS will be available for hydrographic offices, shipping companies, and training centers, allowing stakeholders to experience S-100 in their own environments.

Join Us on the Journey

The transition to S-100 is more than compliance, it’s about building trust and reducing workload for mariners. We are focussed on delivering systems that crews value, regulators approve, and owners rely on.
