Global Head of Customer Support

Meet the Expert: Gregor Nordling

From a cadetship on offshore supply vessels to leading global customer support, Gregor Nordling's career has been shaped by hands-on experience across the maritime industry.

Today, as Global Head of Customer Support at Teledyne Raymarine Commercial, Gregor is focused on keeping service standards high while helping crews navigate more safely and efficiently.

From Cadet to Customer Support

Gregor began his career studying nautical science at Jade University in Elsfleth, Germany. As part of his studies, he joined MV Fiducia as a cadet for six months, trading in southeast Asia, and gained further experience aboard the Sailing School Ship Großherzogin Elisabeth on two separate two-week trips, rotating through different roles on board under teacher supervision.

His second cadetship was split between two container ships: MV Janus, trading in south Europe and West Africa, and AS Poseidon, in the Persian Gulf. During university, he also took on student jobs in the industry, working as a stevedore in the port of Brake and as a linesman in the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven, continuing as a linesman for a year after finishing his bachelor's degree.

After a brief stint on a pilot boat, he worked on offshore supply vessels serving wind parks in the German North Sea, mainly aboard Windea Six. His search for a role onshore led to his first customer support position, supporting leisure boats with a product range that included Raymarine products.

A Career Built on Practical Experience

Gregor was drawn to commercial maritime by the promise of a strong mix of practical and technical topics, from understanding technical systems to developing interpersonal and navigation skills. He holds a Nautical Watchkeeping Officer certification along with related licenses, and stays current on regulations and industry standards through newsletters, workshops, fairs, and topic-related meetings.

Driving Quality and Customer Value

During his time at ChartWorld, Gregor implemented Quality Assessments alongside training initiatives, driven by his conviction that ongoing training is key to quality and customer satisfaction. He also led efforts to investigate tools and systems to optimize efficient work.

In his current role at Raymarine Commercial, he's responsible for maintaining service level standards, ensuring timely, high-quality responses to customers. A key focus is continuous training, both on customer service techniques and product knowledge, informed by customer feedback. He also works on cross-department collaboration to deliver a smooth customer experience.

Contributing to the Future of Navigation

For Gregor, the most rewarding part of working in commercial maritime is supporting crews who face multiple tasks and unforeseen events at sea. Providing products that support safer navigation and reduce the time needed for preparing and monitoring routes makes a real difference. He recalls starting as a cadet when paper charts were still standard, and the amount of manual work required for route planning was very high. His biggest reward is contributing to the development that addresses that, which is exactly what Raymarine Comerrcial does.
