Director of Product Management & Technology
From designing the world's first type-approved ECDIS to shaping the international standards that govern digital navigation today, Andrey Vorobyev has spent three decades at the centre of the technology transforming the bridge.
Andrey is Director of Product Management & Technology at Teledyne Raymarine Commercial, where he is responsible for overall product management and business development across the company's full product portfolio.
Andrey's connection to the sea started in childhood, learning to sail with his father on a classical red-wood sailing boat of the Navy Sailing Club. That early love of being on the water never left him, and he is still a passionate yachtsman today. Turning it into a career felt natural, first at sea as a Nautical Officer, and then in developing the technology that supports safe navigation.
Andrey graduated as an Engineer and Nautical Officer from the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy in St. Petersburg (1985 to 1993). His seagoing career began while he was still at the academy and continued as a Deck Officer aboard a dry-cargo liner ship of the Baltic Shipping Company, before he moved ashore into the marine electronics industry.
Ashore, Andrey started at Transas Technologies, first as a Quality Engineer and later as Chief Design Engineer of the Navigation Product Line, where he led development of the NaviSailor 2400 ECDIS, the world's first ECDIS to receive full type approval, granted by Germany's BSH in October 1999. He went on to contribute to several further ECDIS and INS development projects, though as he puts it, the first will always come first.
Andrey later served as Sales and Marketing Director at Navis Engineering Oy, a company developing ship automation and dynamic positioning systems. In 2011, he joined ChartWorld International as Chief Technical Officer, a role he held for almost 14 years, before moving into his current position as Director of Product Management & Technology at Teledyne Raymarine Commercial in 2025.
Since 1995, Andrey has contributed to the development of navigational equipment standards, particularly for ECDIS and Integrated Navigation Systems, through the IHO and IEC. Since 2015, he has also served as a Technical Expert on the Nautical Sub-Committee (NSC) of ISTEC at INTERTANKO, contributing directly to projects including the Guide to Safe Navigation and the Bridge Design Guidelines. He now also supports his team's contributions to normative documents at Raymarine Commercial. Helping to develop IHO and IEC standards, rather than simply following them, is, in his words, the most reliable way to stay current.
In his current role, Andrey is responsible for overall product management and business development across Raymarine Commercial's full product portfolio, work that builds directly on the systems-design and standards experience he has built since the earliest days of ECDIS. One of the constant challenges in his role is balancing fast-moving product development against the slower pace of regulatory change. His approach is to stay embedded in the standards process itself, helping colleagues with IHO and IEC contributions and through his ongoing INTERTANKO work, so that product decisions are informed early rather than adjusted after the fact.
What Andrey finds most rewarding is that the work does not stay behind a desk. His seagoing career taught him what reliability really means for bridge equipment when a ship is under way, and that same standard still drives him. As a passionate yachtsman in his private life, contributing to the design, testing, and use of navigation equipment of every kind is as much a personal hobby as it is part of his job. Seeing the tools he helps develop actually used and trusted on the water, on big bridges and small boats alike, is what makes the work feel real.
